The Aroma of Lavender

Designed by Betty Stokoe
Skill Level:  Intermediate
Design Size: 5.5" square on 22-ct

Call it Lavender therapy if you will, this little Hardanger peace (er, piece) is good for a stitcher's soul. Spend an hour a day with the rich purple shades of soft Silk Mori and Silk Serica threads. If needlework can be meditation, there's nothing more satisfying that laying thread in the Satin Stitch (nice smooth, even strokes creating a surface of maximum light reflection). Use it to make Kloster Blocks out of Silk Serica, noting the luminescent texture of this filament silk.

Materials needed:

  • Kreinik Silk Serica¨ in 6123, 6124, 6126
  • Kreinik Silk Mori¨ (2.5m skein of each) in 6123, 6124, 6126
  • Zweigart 22-count Oslo Hardanger fabric in white

Instructions:

Use Silk Serica as it comes, straight from the reel, as a 3-ply twisted filament silk.

  1. Work the center pinwheel motif in satin stitch alternating the medium and dark shades of Silk Serica (6124 Medium Dusty Lavender and 6126 Dark Dusty Lavender).
  2. Work all Kloster blocks using Silk Serica 6123 Light Dusty Lavender.
  3. Work the satin stitch border design alternating the medium shade 6124 Silk Serica and the darker shade 6126 Silk Serica to give the appearance of a twisted ribbon.
  4. Work the scroll border in backstitch using two strands of Silk Mori 6124 Medium Dusty Lavender, stitching the eyelets with two strands of Silk Mori 6126 Dark Dusty Lavender.
  5. Stitch the eyelets around the center pinwheel using two strands of Silk Mori 6123 Light Dusty Lavender.
  6. Cut and remove the marked threads within the Kloster block sections.
  7. Use two strands of Silk Mori 6123 for the woven bars, Dove's Eyes, and 3-sided Dove's Eyes.
