Ghost Pocket Placemat

Silverware pockets are a fun addition to plain placemats. We found this black mesh placemat at the dollar store and knew it would be perfect for a felt ghost pocket to celebrate Halloween.

Materials needed:
  • black mesh placemat from the dollar store, or any placemat
  • scraps of grey felt and black felt
  • Kreinik Fine #8 Braid in 019 Pewter and 052F Grapefruit (or any Kreinik color of your choice)
  • sharp embroidery needle with large eye
  • needle threader
  • gray sewing thread or Treasure Tape 1/4" roll

Instructions:
1. Draw a freehand ghost on paper, or look for ghost templates online or from a child's coloring book. Following your pattern or freehand, cut out a gray ghost shape and two black eyes from your felt pieces.
2. Using the Kreinik Braid 019 and a blanket stitch, outline the ghost.
3. Add the eyes by placing on your ghost, then making a French Knot in each eye to secure it to the gray ghost.
4. Attach the ghost applique to your placemat with small hidden stitches using sewing thread. Leave an opening at the top so you can insert your silverware into the pocket.

Alternative: if you want your applique to be temporary, use Kreinik Treasure Tape 1/4" roll to attach the pumpkin pocket.
