Silk Serica®
Kreinik Silk Serica® is a 3-ply twisted filament silk, which means it has a beautiful bright sheen. Use it as you would a pearl cotton (it's about the size of a pearl cotton #5), or separate it and use as a flat silk (a slightly damp cosmetic sponge can help remove the ripples). Serica is a truly versatile and gorgeous thread for needlepoint (ideal coverage on 18-count canvas), embroidery, crazy quilting, Hardanger, and other fiber arts. Dry clean for the best care.

How to use Kreinik Silk Serica®
Silk Serica® can be used as is, straight from the reel, as a 3-ply twisted filament silk. It can also be separated and used as a flat silk. Made of 100% pure filament silk, the sheen is so rich and bright, it instantly turns any design into a work of art. Perfect in heirloom projects and designs focusing on different textures.
The most important tip to remember when working with Silk Serica: moisturize your hands with a non-greasy hand cream. This will keep the filament silk from snagging on rough spots.
See Description below for more tips and usage ideas.

Satin Stitch
Where to use it:
- grass
- steps
- borders and bands
- hearts
- baskets
- easiest to use on an openweave fabric like linen
What to use:
- Kreinik Silk Mori (1 or 2 strands)
- Kreinik Silk Serica
How to do it:
Follow the diagrams showing the different variations. This is one of the easiest, most versatile, and prettiest stitches you can do to add a smooth texture. It’s basically a group of straight stitches laid very close together. You can do it vertically, horizontally, or diagonally for different effects. Lay your thread smoothly and neatly, using your needle, your finger, or a laying tool to keep the thread flat. Uniform tension is important too, so one stitch isn’t pulling more than any other in your row or section.

Feather Stitch or Feathered Chain
Feather, Feathered chainWhere to use it:
- bands and borders
- vines
- trees
- ferns and plants
What to use:
- Kreinik Braid
- Kreinik Silk Mori (one strand)
- Kreinik Silk Serica
How to do it:
Follow the diagrams for the Feather stitch and the similar Feathered Chain stitch. Work from top to bottom. Try to keep stitches evenly spaced. -
Rice Stitch
Rice stitch is composed of a large "x" cross stitch, covered by smaller stitches. This is a fun stitch where you can use one or two colors to create a layered look for added texture and dimension in a design. If using two different thread types, use the heavier thread for the bottom stitch, and thinner threads on the top.
Where to use it:
- as bands in samplers
- as borders
- to replicate a lattice or fence
- in needlepoint, it makes a nice background stitch
- on linen, over 4 or more threads
- on needlepoint canvas
What to use:
Kreinik Silk Mori, Kreinik Silk Serica, Kreinik Silk Bella, Kreinik Very Fine #4 Braid, Kreinik Fine #8 Braid
How to do it:
Work the large cross stitch first, coming up at 1, down at 2, up at 3, down at 4. Then - using the same thread, a different color, or a different thread - work the overlapping stitches, coming up at 1, down at 2, up at 3, etc.
-
French Knot
This is a fun stitch you can use to create many effects in designs. It can be small or large. Using more than one strand of thread or a thick braid, for instance, makes the knot fuller.Where to use it:
- wherever you want a "dot"
- as flower centers with letters and numbers and punctuation marks
- use in bunches to replicate sheep, curly hair, a beard or moustache, etc.
- to replicate snowballs
- as accent on eyes
- filling stitch
- also popular in Ribbon Embroidery
What to use:
- Kreinik Braids - any size, depending on your ground fabric and design
- Kreinik Ombre
- Kreinik 1/16" ribbon
- Kreinik Silk Mori
- Kreinik Silk Serica
- Kreinik Silk Bella
How to do it:
Come up at 1, wrap the thread around your needle either once or twice depending on the design instructions, then plunge your needle back down into the fabric right beside the spot where you started (don't go back down into the same hole). Keep the thread snugly around your needle.

Blue TulipsDesigned by Laura Perin
Design Size: 140w x 140hThis is exciting 'blackwork.' The light-dancing touch of metallic thread mingles with the soft solid color (yes, color! blue!) of silk.Thin versus thick threads spin around each other to give a sense of depth and dimension. Stitches combine to create pattern that delights the eye. (But the best part is the light play from the metallic thread.) Enjoy this intermediate-level project designed to experience blackwork-style embroidery with a variety of threads.
