The threads to use for needlepoint
- Smaller thread offers less friction and tension, especially with close stitches like tent or basketweave
- In metallics, a thinner metallic thread is often softer than thicker metallic threads
- Colors with letters in the numbers (like 003HL, 002V, 001J, 002C, 054F, 008L) tend to be thicker than colors without letters (like 002, 003, 001), so many stitchers go down a braid size to accommodate the slight variation in thickness
- Some stitchers like to have a little bit of a painted canvas showing through
Check the stitch illustration below to see the difference between #8 and #12 Braid.

Basically, you can use either size, but beginners may want to start with the softer #8 Braid size for basic tent or continental stitching. Choose #12 Braid for a thicker look—but note that if #12 Braid colors with letters in the numbers (like 002HL, 001J) feel too thick, go down to #8 Braid size (they come in the same color range).
For specialty stitches, anything goes! Try any Kreinik Braid size to get the look and thickness you want for your design.
