The threads to use for needlepoint

Which Kreinik Braid size is best on 18-count needlepoint canvas?

We get this question a lot, especially from new stitchers. While Kreinik Tapestry #12 Braid was created in the 1990s for the ideal (full) coverage on 18-count, many prefer the slightly thinner Kreinik Fine #8 Braid. See the photograph for the difference. It truly is a matter of personal preference, and this is considering basic stitches not any specialty stitch.

Here are a few reasons why one might use #8 Braid on 18-count instead of #12:
  1. Smaller thread offers less friction and tension, especially with close stitches like tent or basketweave
  2. In metallics, a thinner metallic thread is often softer than thicker metallic threads
  3. Colors with letters in the numbers (like 003HL, 002V, 001J, 002C, 054F, 008L) tend to be thicker than colors without letters (like 002, 003, 001), so many stitchers go down a braid size to accommodate the slight variation in thickness
  4. Some stitchers like to have a little bit of a painted canvas showing through

Check the stitch illustration below to see the difference between #8 and #12 Braid.

Basically, you can use either size, but beginners may want to start with the softer #8 Braid size for basic tent or continental stitching. Choose #12 Braid for a thicker look—but note that if #12 Braid colors with letters in the numbers (like 002HL, 001J) feel too thick, go down to #8 Braid size (they come in the same color range).

For specialty stitches, anything goes! Try any Kreinik Braid size to get the look and thickness you want for your design.
