Rose Motif Designed by J.Marsha Michler Marsha has written terrific how-to books on crazy quilting, including the popular “The Magic of Crazy Quilting.” Her latest book (“Motifs for Crazy Quliting”) showcases specific spot motifs to use in quilting projects. These designs are suitable for wall hangings, wearables, and anything fabric-related — think album covers, sachets, etc. They are embroidery patterns that can be used in many ways. We asked Marsha to share a special motif with Kreinik web site visitors. She created this rose motif from Kreinik Silk Bella, Mori and Serica. The result is a beautiful, heirloom rose—we’re sure it would take the prize in any garden scene. Materials needed: -

If you have trouble downloading this file and would like us to send you a printed copy send a #10 SASE to: Rose Motif, 3106 Lord Baltimore Drive, Suite 101, Baltimore, MD 21244. 1. Transfer the motif using the tracing paper transfer technique (this technique is outlined in Marsha’s books). 2. Outline the rose by couching Kreinik Tapestry (#12) Braid 001J Silver using the thin Kreinik Japan #1 001J. 3. Outline the remaining parts of the design with a running stitch or backstitch. Use one strand of Silk Bella in green for the leaves and stem, and one strand of Bella in dark rose for the ribbon outlining. 4. Remove the tracing paper from the fabric. 5. Fill in the design as you like, following the shading given in the photo, or shade as you see appropriate. (Our note: It’s important to feel freedom as you are filling in this design. Many of us are afraid to do random, free-motion stitches for fear it won’t look right. Well, take a look at nature; the are variances in shades, textures, in fact, nothing’s perfect! Have fun with stitches, don’t fret over them.) Our model includes the following stitches: -
Backstitch in Silk Mori for filling in the stems -
French Knots in Silk Serica for the rose -
Coral Stitch in Silk Serica for the leaves -
Seed Stitch in Silk Serica for the bow © Copyright 2003 Kreinik. This design may be reproduced for free distribution but not kitted, sold or changed J. Marsha Michler’s books are published by Krause Publications. Look for them at your local quilting or fabric store. |
