Upcycled Postage Stamp Card

This is a beautiful way to recycle some of the gorgeous postage stamps from any country. If you are throwing out used envelopes or bills, take a look at the stamp to see if it can be worked into a card.

Handmade holiday cards in particular mean so much to a recipient, and can even be a work of textile art. Just add fiber, Kreinik Iron-on Metallic Thread (no stitching required!)

Materials needed:

  • holiday postal stamp (we used stamps cut from old holiday cards)
  • Kreinik Iron-on 1/8" Ribbon in Silver, Gold, and one other color to coordinate with your stamp (we used royal blue)
  • white cardstock cut and folded to be desired size of card
  • scrap of cardstock slightly larger than your postage stamp
  • rubber stamp in a design to coordinate with your postage stamp (we used snowflakes to coordinate with the polar bear) and stamp pad
  • stickers if desired
  • glue or double-sided tape
  • household iron or craft iron
  • Kreinik small adhesive press cloth to cover the foot of your craft iron*
  • fancy-edge scissors in a wave pattern (optional)

Instructions for making the card in our model:

* If the plate of your iron does not have a non-stick surface, we suggest adding a Kreinik Adhesive Press cloth to the plate while the iron is unplugged and completely cool, or using a moveable press cloth. This will keep the adhesive in the thread from sticking to your iron.

  1. Turn your iron onto the highest heat setting and let it heat thoroughly.
  2. If desired: trim the bottom of the front of the card only using your fancy-edge scissors. We will decorate this edge later.
  3. Using your rubber stamp and ink pad, decorate the blank card front as desired.
  4. Glue or tape the recycled postage stamp to the scrap of cardstock. Then glue that to the center of your card front.
  5. With your hot iron and a color of Kreinik Iron-on 1/8" Ribbon, decorate the wavy edge of the card: lay the thread at a starting point, cover with your iron, and press for several seconds until the thread adheres. Continue working the design this way.
  6. Add a border of Iron-on Thread around your postage stamp in the same way, if desired, using silver, gold, or your chosen accent color of 1/8" Ribbon. Or add curly q's made with the thread elsewhere on the card. See our models for placement inspiration.
  7. Add stickers if desired.
