Moonlight Evening Bag

Designed by: Amy Law

Make a quick evening bag with this pattern. The secret is decorating (upcycling) a thrift store bag - you save money, and can transform it into a custom, beaded, elegant accessory to match any outfit.

Materials:
  • plain black satin evening bag
  • Fabric scraps in coordinating colors
  • 8" x 10" Treasure Tape Sheet
  • Kreinik Diamond Beadlets
  • Kreinik 1/8" Ribbon 005 Black
  • Kreinik Tapestry #12 Braid in 001 Silver
  • Tools: scissors, tray or bag
Instructions:
  1. Cut a piece of your Treasure Tape to the size of your purse's flap.  Cut strips of fabric in varying widths, to cover the entire piece of tape with a 1/2" overlap on all sides.
  2. Peel back the white liner a little bit at a time and begin placing your fabric strips on the tape, leaving the overhangs so you can wrap them around to the back.  Smooth with your fingers as you go to remove air bubbles.  Once your entire piece of tape is covered, flip it over and peel back the red liner. Fold your strips around onto the back side of the tape. Replace your liner.
  3. Cut several strips from your remaining tape, long enough to fold over the top and bottom of your design. You can cut straight-edged pieces or add wavy edges. Apply the strips to your design, covering seams between fabric strips if necessary. Fold over the ends of each strip, toward the back.
  4. Begin embellishing with your threads. Use the Silver braids to make loops, stripes, and zig-zags in whatever design you like- you can follow the designs of your fabrics as a guide or make up your own.  With the ribbon make more stripes or add a dramatic "ruching" effect.  Use the end of a thin dowel (or knitting needle) and after anchoring one end of the ribbon, wrap it around your dowel and press to anchor the other end of the loop to the tape. Repeat this process, adding more tight loops, until you reach the other side of your design.
  5. When you are finished with the thread, remove the red liner from the back again. Secure all thread ends on the back under additional strips of tape. Place four strips around the edges of your design so the whole piece will adhere tightly to your bag. Remove all piece of red liner and center your design on your purse's flap.  Press with your fingers to adhere and smooth out any air bubbles.
  6. Finish your purse by placing it in a shallow tray or ziplock bag.  Pour diamond Beadlets over any exposed areas of tape on your design.  Swirl with your fingers to cover fully and tap to remove excess beadlets. Press lightly with an iron to strengthen the bond if desired.
