Suggestions for Appliqué with Kid Leather

Kreinik Kid Leather is available in elegant metallic colors, plus solid black. It makes a unique true-to-life texture to embellish a painted canvas, costume, home decor item, and clothing.

Where to use Kid Leather:
It can create an elegant and high fashion look, a realistic effect, or a whimsical touch.  Apply it to handbags, eyeglass cases, belts, etc. for a fashion statement.

On a needlepoint design, Kid may be appliquéd after all the background has been stitched.  This eliminates the need to use compensating stitches around the kid.
Appliqué it to painted canvases to depict saddles, boots, bags, sun, moon, architectural elements, golf bags, etc.  It can be applied to any size canvas. Create a whimsical touch by using it for angel wings, stars and ornaments on a Christmas tree, and all manner of fantastical creatures.  The possibilities are endless; let the design inspire you!

Cutting Kid Leather:
Use sharp scissors and practice on felt before cutting kid.  Right-handers should cut in a counter clockwise direction; left-handers should cut in a clockwise direction.  This progression helps bevel or taper the edges (which trims away a bit more of the underside than the top) so the kid rests smoothly on the surface of the embroidery or fabric.

  1. Make a pattern by tracing the desired shape on tissue paper
  2. Place the pattern on the right side of the kid and carefully cut out the desired shape.  Cut through the pattern and the kid together.  Be sure to keep the paper pattern in place to insure accuracy in cutting.  If necessary, removable tape may be used to keep the pattern from slipping.
  3. If extra padding is desired, cut the same shape from felt but make it slightly smaller so it fits underneath the kid without adding bulk to the edges.

Stitching:
Use a fine, sharp needle, such as a Glover’s needle, and a single strand of silk sewing thread.  Work uniform and closely spaced stitches for invisible attachment.
    1.    If using a felt padding, attach it first with invisible stitches, the position the kid and attach it on top of the felt.
    2.    Bring the needle up from underneath the canvas.  Pierce the underside of the kid near the edge and bring your needle to the surface of the canvas.  Do no stitch through to the surface of the kid.  Go back through the embroidery to the wrong side and continue the invisible stitches around the shape, keeping them uniformly spaced.

In some designs the stitches holding the kid on the canvas are an integral part of the design and are mean to be visible.  In this case it is very important to keep the stitches precisely the same size and uniformly spaced.

The tape method:
An alternate way to attach kid leather is by using heavy-duty double-sided tape such as the Treasure Tape carried by Kreinik. Note that by using tape instead of stitches, the edges won't be as secure. However, tape is a good alternate method for a quick application or even a quick fix in emergencies.
