Fabulous Fabric Ornament
Do you keep old dresses, pillowcases, doll clothes, loose buttons,
pieces of lace or trim, etc because they remind you of childhood or of a
loved one? Or perhaps you love to collect textiles from antique stores
and thrift shops. Making fabric ornaments is a great way to turn those
mementos into a keepsake item that is small to store, and can be seen
every year at the holidays. We used the new Kreinik ornament frame to
finish this ornament in a simple, inexpensive and elegant way. We used
red ticking fabric, rick-rack, a button and crocheted flower. Just add
new threads to make it fresh and fabulous.
Materials needed:
-
Kreinik gold or silver Ornament Frame
- Kreinik Iron-on metallic thread in colors to match your project. We
used 1/8" Ribbon in 6205 Sunflower. #16 Braid in 6300 Meadow, and #16
Braid in 6130 Red
- Craft iron or home iron
- Teflon press cloth or adhesive Teflon Press Cloth on your craft iron
- background fabric that fits in the ornament frame center (at least 3 to 4 inches
- lace, buttons, rick-rack, etc for embellishment and layering
- glue gun
Instructions:
1. Turn your iron on to the highest heat setting and let it heat thoroughly.
2. Decorate your background fabric with the iron-on threads. Use the
threads to outline a pattern on the fabric, or fill in lines. You can
also write words, or just do curly q's. Lay your iron-on thread at a
starting point, cover with a Teflon Press Cloth or use your craft iron
that has teflon on it, and press the thread for several seconds until it
adheres. Continue working with the thread this way until your design is
complete.

3. Add layers of embellishments with your mementos. We added green
rick-rack, then a crocheted flower, then a button, using a glue gun to
secure.
4. When embellishing is complete, trim the fabric piece to fit inside
the ornament frame. Make a sandwich of the metallic ornament frame front
and the backer card that comes with the frame. Secure all layers with
the Treasure Tape that comes with the frame.
5. Add a decorative bow at the top if desired.
