Transform an inexpensive dollar-store ornament into a fiber-fun, texturalized, dimensional, colorful decoration using Kreinik metallic threads. We found this one at Dollar Tree, but it was too plain. A few simple embellishments transform it into a work of art. Easy and quick, you can make several for neighbors and shut-ins this holiday season.
Materials needed:
-
Joy ornament (we found ours at Dollar Tree, look for similar at craft stores or online craft marketplaces)
-
Kreinik 1/4" Ribbon in 015 Chartreuse
-
Kreinik Heavy #32 Braid in 203
-
Crochet hook (small to medium size)
-
Buttons if desired
-
Glue
Instructions:
RIBBON: Take the 1/4" Ribbon and tug at one of the fibers at the end. Slowly pull that fiber, while moving the remaining ribbon in the opposite direction. This is called ruching. The ribbon will fold in on itself as you pull the strand, creating a rick-rack look. Make your ruched ribbon as long as needed to go on the "O" of "Joy." (about five inches) Tie knots in both ends of the ribbon to keep it from raveling. Glue the ribbon onto the O and let it dry completely.
CROCHET: Single crochet with the #32 Braid color 203 for as long as you need to make a circle on the ruched ribbon (about five inches). Turn, single crochet (or half double crochet if desired) all the way back, then tie off. Glue the crocheted piece on top of the ruched ribbon you glued earlier. Allow to dry completely.
FINISH: Glue buttons if desired.
