Iron-on Heart Garland

Iron-on Heart Garland

Iron-on Heart Garland

This is a quick project to transform a drab $1 garland into a shimmery, cheerful Valentine decoration. The magic is in the metallic thread, which makes everything brighter, makes the color pop, and catches the eye. The metallic threads used in this project are iron-on, which means no-sew, no-glitter, no-mess "faux embroidery" that can be done in less than an hour. Fun!

Materials needed:

  • $1 felt-and-burlap heart garland from the Dollar bin at Target, or make your own (see instructions below)
  • $1 sheet of adhesive crystals in pink, red, and silver colors from the Dollar bin at Target, or something similar
  • Kreinik Iron-on 1/8" Ribbon in 6580 Violet
  • Kreinik Iron-on #16 Braid in 6020 Silver
  • Craft iron or household iron
  • Kreinik Adhesive Press Cloth

Instructions:

  1. We always recommend using the Kreinik Press Cloth to keep plate of your iron clean and smooth. While the iron is turned off, attach the adhesive Press Cloth to your iron, flattening out any bubbles.
  2. Turn your iron onto the highest heat setting and let it heat thoroughly.
  3. Begin outlining the shapes and letters on the purchased heart garland using the Iron-on Threads. Lay the thread at a starting point, cover with your hot iron and press for a few seconds until the thread adheres. Continue working your design this way.
  4. When thread ironing is complete, attach adhesive crystals in various places as desired.

To make your own heart garland:

Download the heart template here.

  1. You will need red felt, tan burlap fabric (or any fabric you desire), 1/2" red ribbon,  heart template (use ours, or use a cookie cutter as a guide), Kreinik 8" x 10" double-sided Treasure Tape or fabric glue.
  2. Cut out heart shapes from the felt, using the cookie cutter or template as a guide.
  3. Cut out fabric heart shapes about 1/4" smaller than the felt hearts.
  4. Glue or tape the fabric hearts to the felt hearts.
  5. Cut 1/2" vertical slits on the right and the left sides of each heart. Weave the ribbon through the slits so that each heart is strung on the ribbon. Tie the ends of the ribbon into loops for hanging.
  6. If desired, draw X, O, or hearts on each one using a fabric marker. Then decorate with Iron-on Threads as shown above.
