Dress Sash

This is an easy way to dress up a vintage garment, child's dress purchased at Goodwill or consignment store, or any hand-me-down. Use digitized embroidery patterns stitched onto ribbon — it is that simple. This technique can also be used to make a headband for the holidays, prom, homecoming dance, wedding, or any special occasion.

Materials needed:
• wide ribbon to suit the garment you are trying to match
• digitized embroidery pattern for your sewing machine
• stabilizer
• embroidery hoop for your machine
• Topstitch 100 needle
• Kreinik machine sewing metallic threads (we used Fine Twist in Copper and in Golden Brown)

Instructions:
1. Size your digitized embroidery pattern to fit onto your ribbon.
2. Using manufacturer's directions according to the kind of stabilizer you are using, put stabilizer on the back of your ribbon.
3. Place your ribbon/stabilizer in the embroidery hoop.
4. Begin stitching your pattern using the following tips:
• Slow your machine slightly.
• Put metallic thread on a vertical stand (or if it is a cone, set it next to your sewing machine) so the thread can uncurl and relax prior to going through the machine tension areas.
• A plastic embroidery foot will give you better results than a metal foot because it allows the thread to glide (metal foot may cause the thread to snap)
• Reduce your presser foot pressure slightly if using a dense stitch.
• Skip the last thread guide when using metallic threads.
5. When embroidered ribbon is complete as desired, remove stabilizer and sew the ribbon onto your garment, or use as a belt, or simply tie around your waist.
