Laughter really is the best medicine
Ever have one of those days when you stub your toe first thing out of bed, and the next thing you know, your coffee pot brews dirty looking water, your toast burns, and you’re late getting to work? Well, a few days ago, that’s exactly the morning I had. On my drive into work, I wondered how I’d ever get through the day.
It was pouring outside that day. I parked my car at work and proceeded to walk down the grassy hill that separates the parking lot from my building. I held my umbrella and tote bag in one hand, and a lunch bag in the other. I stepped in a puddle and up splashed a torrent of mud on my newly pressed taupe dress pants. Then, the unthinkable happened. The grass under my feet was so wet and slippery, my feet lost traction and I went flying up in the air and landed smack on my rear end.
I was so embarrassed. I jumped to my feet and looked around to see who saw my fall. And of course, a co-worker was right there to witness it all. She ran to my rescue to see if she could help. That’s when I noticed my umbrella landed to the right of me a few dozen feet away, my tote bag in a complete opposite direction, and my lunch bag far off behind me. I was a mess. Then, I looked at my behind and saw a stain the size of the United States stretched clear across my backside. I was drenched and looked like a kid who just took a joyride down a muddy mountain slope. I gathered my things quietly and walked back to my car, all but whispering over my shoulder that I’d be back in an hour. I was going home to change.
As soon as I got into my car, and the whole five mile drive back home, I cracked up in hysterics, laughing so hard, I had tears racing down my face. People in other cars just looked at me like I was crazy. This just made me laugh harder. Even when I got home, I laughed some more in my empty home, and then, I continued my laughing all the way back to work. I guess my point is, finding the humor in something can really make something bad turn into something wonderful. I’m happy to report that the rest of my day went smoothly. And I made it through the day just fine, wearing the biggest smile of anyone in the office. It ended up being a very happy day.
