Learning Something New!

One of the goals that my husband and I made for ourselves in 2008 was to learn something new. So, when a course catalog from a local community college arrived in our mailbox a month ago, we combed through it for the perfect opportunity. We selected Keyboarding 101.

Now, I’ve been a writer for almost a decade, and many of you may be wondering why I would have to take typing lessons. With the computer being such a vital tool in my chosen profession, one would imagine that I’d already know how to find my way around the keys.

Well, I can get by alright with my cavewoman style typing methods, but not as effectively as I could be if I actually knew how to type with all my fingers instead of just two of them.

Ever since I started using a computer on a regular basis, I’ve admired the typist that can laugh, talk, look over her shoulder and still type a complete sentence without a single mistake. I’ve tried to imitate these model typists, and let’s just say, the results were not something that made a smidgen of sense.

I often wonder how much time I’ve wasted over the years hitting backspace and delete. In a day’s time, I would bet I hit them a thousand times. Well, now, three weeks into my class, I am happy to report that I typed the last 236 words of this editorial hitting backspace only twice (big smile). And, my office is dark, as the sun is setting rapidly and I’m too engrossed in typing to get up and turn my lights on. I wish I wouldn’t have waited so long to do this. Learning is so much fun!

What about you? Is there a new skill you have always wanted to learn, but haven’t gotten around to learning it? What are you waiting for?

If you’ve never stitched with silk before, then this month’s project may well be the learning treat for you! Prepare to be inspired by this beautiful Betsy Foster design.

Enjoy!
