The Greatest Journey of All!

I watched the original version of Journey to the Center of the Earth the other day. My husband was so excited to see it again, as it is a favorite classic of his. So, he made the popcorn, poured us some drinks and propped up a couple pillows for us both. With an eager smile on his face, he hit the play button. I leaned back against my newly fluffed pillow and stuffed a mouthful of popcorn into my mouth, equally eager to dive into this entertaining classic movie for the first time.

At first, I started fidgeting with the volume control because the voices went in and out and weren’t as crisp as I was used to. Then, as we moved from one scene to another I began to wonder when the movie would take off and send me reeling on the same journey my husband said it took him on every time he watched it. My husband kept saying, "Wait, trust me. It gets much better."

So, I sipped my drink, ate more popcorn and trusted him. I started to pay more attention to the actual dialogue. Then, something magical started to happen. I realized just how cunning and clever their words were. They spoke with eloquence and purpose. Each line perpetuated an emotion on its own, stronger then any special effects could create. As I became more and more attached to the characters' trials and tribulations, the movie began stringing me along its winding trail and into a realm that seemed so real and so simple, even within the context of its mighty quest to the center of the world.

The special effects it did have were a bit cheesy, sure. But, it didn' t really matter. I was invested in this movie a third into it and it had me biting my nails while I worried about how on earth they would save themselves from the unforgiving environment and the downright heartless antagonist.

When the movie ended, I realized I would miss the characters. My husband stared at me with his ‘told you so’ face, and I could only surrender and smile back. I think he loves that movie for the same reasons I do. In the brief time that it took us away from the complex world we live in today, I came out feeling restored by its simplicity.

Sure, I can’t wait to see the new version of this movie as it comes to theaters at the beginning of this month. I still love the thrill of technology! But, I realized that I also love the supreme rank of simplicity, especially when it can tap into the heart the way this movie did for me. Simplicity simply makes my heart sing!

This month, our project is one that will make your heart sing, too, with its reminder of the simple joy found in a favorite pastime – Picnic Time.

Enjoy!
