Waking up to the Joy of Stitching!

This morning I woke up with that excited feeling you get as a kid when there’s two feet of snow piled up outside your bedroom window and the announcement scrolls along the bottom of your television telling you the great news that there’s no school. A full day of goofing off! This particular day I happen to be on vacation from work (no snow to shovel, thankfully), but looking at a full day of freedom nonetheless! I am snuggled up on my sofa with a cup of hot chocolate and planning out the day’s possibilities. I scan the room and plan out my mental to-do list. Let’s see, my pillows need new cases on them. My curtains could use a facelift. Oh and I really should replace that old picture hanging on my wall with a new oil painting perhaps? Hmm, what to start on first?

I sip and brood over the possibilities a bit longer and as the sleep disappears from my eyes and my mind grows more alert, I start to think of more doable things I could finish quicker. I thought of how fast Valentine’s Day would approach and my heart started to skip with a fun flutter. I looked over at my supply shelf and noticed a pile of cardstock jutting out one shelf as if it was calling out to me for company. I continued sipping my hot chocolate and silently planning a valentine card design; calligraphy, stitched yarn along its border, maybe a photo in its center framed with some iron-on thread. Excitement swirled in my tummy along with the chocolate joy I sipped.

I started to wonder what it would be like to have grown up in the times when card stores and big chain department stores weren’t on every corner; when people had to make their presents and cards by hand with the supplies they had in their home. I imagined sisters and their moms sitting around the cozy living room, fire blazing, steamy cups of ciders or teas by their sides, humming songs as they stitched their love onto paper and linens to later share with someone they love.

I rose up from the sofa and plunged into my supplies, stirring with what I could only imagine were the same feelings of joy my ancestors from long ago experienced each time they planned a day of stitching. There’s nothing quite like this feeling, is there?

To help stir up this joy in you, we’ve created Stitched Hearts Card project designed by Erica Fortgens. Warm up a mug of your favorite comfort drink and gather your stitching friends to share in the joy of this beautiful design.

Enjoy!

The Popularity of Paper Embroidery

Elaborate dresses and lavish hairdos weren’t the only elements that marked the Victorian age for all its splendor and glory. A new past time was born that had even the poorest of poor able to indulge in leisure activity. In the wee hours of the morning and deep into the dark of the night, women, even the poorest of them, stitched their hearts out.
