Experience Needle-Time

Needle-Time is a fictional piece written to bring to life the magic that surrounds the love of carrying on the tradition of the needlearts from generation to generation. Join me for a new story each issue that will reflect the strong bond formed between Aunt Lilly and Molly through their special needle-time.

Last issue Aunt Lilly figured out how to help Molly's love for gardening blossom. Join us this issue as Molly and Aunt Lilly decide to start a new friendship with someone in need.

A New Friendship Awaits!

Aunt Lilly and Molly spent the entire afternoon lounging in the library, reading books on the cozy leather chairs that sat beneath the skylight windows.  Aunt Lilly read up on the history of textiles, and how their production has changed over the years, and Molly stuck to a book about a therapy dog named Charlie who visited sick children in the hospital.

The time was getting late and so the two gathered their belongings and headed to the check-out counter. As they walked past the activities table, an older lady smiled at her. She was sitting beside two girls who looked to be about ten years-old. She appeared to be teaching them how to make granny squares. The girls sat real close to her and touched the yarn as if it was the most fragile thing they’d ever seen. The older lady’s eyes twinkled at Molly just before she turned her attention back to the yarn.

“Aunt Lilly, do you think Grammy was as happy as that lady?” Molly motioned over to the older lady.

Aunt Lilly stole a glance over at the happy trio and a smile washed over her face. “Grammy was just as happy. She had three Girl Scouts who would take turns visiting her in the nursing home. They would come dressed in their uniforms, which she adored. They would sneak her in some of those mint cookies, and she would turn into a kid herself, relishing in the fact that she got away with eating sweets.”

Aunt Lilly chuckled as she continued. “Those kids came seeking knowledge on how to knit and how to do counted cross stitch and little did they realize, they were giving her so much more than they were receiving.”

“Was Grammy ever lonely, you think?”

Aunt Lilly handed their books to the check-out person, easing into a crooked smile. “Those kids kept her going. When they weren’t visiting, she planned her next lesson for them. Even as the kids outgrew Girl Scouts, they kept coming. They knew how important their visits were to her spirit.”

Molly reached out for her book as the check-out lady finished scanning it. She paused as they walked through the turnstile. “Do you have to be a Girl Scout to make a friend like Grammy?”

Aunt Lilly’s face lit up. “Are you thinking what I think you’re thinking?’

Molly pushed her way through the turnstile and leapt forward. “I think so!”

Aunt Lilly slipped her arm through her niece’s and the two skipped out of the library. “Let’s go make a new friend, then!”
