This New Year’s Eve, Molly would try really hard to stay awake until midnight. She planned to wear the colorful party hat that she and Aunt Lilly were about to make together and blow confetti into the air. She was old enough to celebrate.
With all their supplies on the table in front of them, the two got to work. Aunt Lilly folded the cardstock into the hat shape and Molly stapled them into place.
“Aunt Lilly, I want to be at your party tonight.”
Without a hint of hesitation, Aunt Lilly spoke. “Then, why don’t you come? If you get tired, you can fall asleep.”
Molly had never stayed awake until midnight before. This would be her first time. “Fall asleep and miss the birth of the New Year?”
Aunt Lilly sprinkled glitter on a circle of glue. “Staying up until midnight isn’t what makes the New Year exciting.”
New Year’s never felt exciting to her. She fell asleep in one year and woke up in a new one, never seeing that moment when it magically changed. “Surely something magical happens at midnight, Aunt Lilly.”
Aunt Lilly simply shrugged.
Molly wouldn’t miss the magic of New Year’s Eve ever again. Tonight would be the start of something wonderful. She could feel it. She resolved that she wouldn’t miss it for the world!
Molly ate cookies and drank eggnog as she watched the clock tick by. Some of the grown-ups danced Salsa. Molly sat by Aunt Lilly’s side on her sofa and listened to her chat with the neighbor, Mrs. Brinkley. They talked about how the next morning they would start their walking routine.
Mrs. Roberts chimed in and said that she was giving up eating chocolate for her New Year’s resolution. One by one, people came forward and said what they were going to do different in the New Year. Mr. Jones was giving up smoking and Teddy, the neighborhood dog walker, was giving up wasting so much gas in the next year. Mrs. Marshall was going to simplify her life and Aunt Lilly was going to read more.
As each person spoke, Molly felt her eyes grow heavy. She looked to the clock and she still had two hours to stay awake.
“Why don’t you take a small nap, Molly,” Aunt Lilly said.
She had promised herself that she would not fall asleep, but fighting it was hard. “I made a resolution to stay awake though.”
“Well, it’s much easier to keep a resolution if you have someone by your side to help you!”
Indeed, something magical was starting way before the clock struck midnight. Molly’s eyes closed and she drifted to sleep knowing her Auntie would be there to make sure her resolution would come true.
