Experience Needle-Time

Needle-Time is a fictional piece written to bring to life the magic that surrounds the love of carrying on the tradition of the needlearts from generation to generation. Join me for a new story each issue that will reflect the strong bond formed between Aunt Lilly and Molly through their special needle-time.

Last issue Molly helped Aunt Lilly see life through a whole new perspective. Join us this issue as Aunt Lilly realizes how special people really are to her.

A Smiling Heart

When Aunt Lilly turned the corner and found her niece, Molly, and three of her friends, yanking up the weeds that threatened to overcome her once well-manicured flower beds, she welled up inside. Not wanting the girls to see her break down into a deluge of tears, she tiptoed backwards and, when safely on the other side of the corner, hobbled back to her half-filled cup of iced-tea perched ever-so refreshingly on the small table beside her back porch rocker.

Before breaking her wrist and ankle falling down a flight of stairs, she took many things for granted. The simple task of retrieving her mail transformed itself into an all-out journey. Scrubbing her toilet and shower now had to wait for the helpful hands of friends from church. When she said to Molly the prior weekend that the weeds were killing her beautiful flower beds, she never dreamed the little girl would sneak over and take matters into her own hands, assembling an army of willing volunteers. But there she had found her knelt over, sweat trickling from her forehead down to the dry earth below, tending to her hearty mums and daffodils.

Since her injury, she not only woke more thankful to be alive each morning, but she also realized the natural goodness in people’s hearts. Neighbors, whom she’d never really dealt with too much before her accident, would come to check on her and share plates of food with her. Co-workers sent her a great big care package. One lady from her church even offered to come check on her daily just to make sure she had everything she needed. And now Molly, instead of going to her girl scout meeting that afternoon, chose to surprise her with a beautiful front yard.

Although the accident resulted in her being unable to do the little day-to-day things that usually made her happy, it did bring something wonderful to her life. For the first time in a long time, she was reminded of just how beautiful and giving people are in times of need. With a lighter heart and a deeper sense of respect for those she made a part of her life, Aunt Lilly reverted back to her book with a greater smile in her heart.
