The Next Greatest Adventure
I just got back from a trip to Banner Elk, North Carolina. And, what a beautiful trip it was! We stayed in a friend’s cabin, which was perched right atop a mountain of its own, nestled snuggly amidst the foliage. Breathing in the crisp mountain air, I sipped flavored coffee and read books every morning, afternoon, and night. Hiking for a couple of hours each day, we enjoyed the great outdoors and left technology completely behind us. A few times I would find myself checking my cell phone out of habit. Normally not having service would drive me batty, but not this particular week. As the days went on I could envision progressing onward with my life without having my ringing phone attached to my belt loop. And my laptop… Of course I brought it with me just in case. And I even unpacked it from the car and its holder, placing it prominently on the dining table. Every time I ventured to the kitchen, I saw it. And, I kept right on walking. A whole week without staring into a computer monitor’s screen was heaven. I didn’t miss it a bit. In place of television, we read books. I read two in fact. This is something I haven’t done for years. A few times at the beginning of the week my mind would race back to my work or the unpaid bills I left lying on my kitchen counter. By the last few days though, my mind was quiet as can be. Finally, after five long years, I took a real vacation and relaxed. My husband and I didn’t want to go home, and apparently, neither did our Boxer puppy, General Chesty, for when I pulled on his leash to get him through our home’s front door, he resisted by planting his front paws firmly into the ground and challenging me to a game of tug o’ war.
All great things do have to come to an end. But, if we are strategic in our thinking about it, when one great thing ended, we wouldn’t stay in the past with it. We’d move forward toward the next great thing life was about to throw our way. Are you ready? It’s just one click away... |
