Dragonfly Quilt Block

Designed by: Treasure It®
Skill level: Intermediate

Here’s a fun no-sew quilt block you can attach to a quilted background. Use your child’s drawing, printed onto fabric, or create your own design on a piece of fabric. When you add beads, tape, yarn, ribbon, and thread, the result is 3-dimensional fun.

Materials needed:

  • Two 8” x 10” sheets of Treasure Tape
  • Diamond Beadlets
  • Kreinik 1/8" Ribbon in a color to match your fabric, such as 044 Confetti Blue, 622 Wedgewood, or 393 Silver Night if you're using blue shades
  • Light blue velvet ¼” ribbon (or color to match your fabric)
  • 4 flower appliques
  • One button for a bug "head"
  • Flat-backed cabochons for wings
  • Rick-rack for body (we used pink)
  • Design printed on fabric sheet (8 1/2" x 11")

Instructions:

  1. Remove the white backing from an 8x10 sheet of Treasure Tape. Lay the fabric piece on the sticky tape, with the printed side facing the tape. Smooth out any bubbles.
  2. Turn your fabric piece over and remove the red liner exposing the top sticky area.
  3. Lay the blue velvet ribbon all around the edge of the fabric piece, pressing into the tape to adhere.
  4. Lay the applique flowers randomly around the picture, pressing into the tape to adhere.
  5. Lay the cabochons as desired on the wings and antennae. Use the 1/8" ribbon to outline the dragonfly's wings, and fill in wing area as desired (we used a zig-zag pattern).
  6. Place the large button on the dragonfly for a head.
  7. Fill in the dragonfly's body with the rick-rack, laying it from side to side and pressing into the tape to adhere.
  8. When thread decorating is complete, lay your design in a shallow pan or tray and cover all remaining sticky areas with Diamond Beadlets.
