Really Living
I think it’s accurate to assume that most of us have had those Mondays that we stare at the calendar and say, ‘I wish it were Friday.’ I’m guilty of being such a person. I find I live for my weekends, rushing the days of the week by so I can just get to relax and enjoy life a little.
Most of us pack our days with so many things that we hardly have time to sit down for a moment and enjoy a cup of coffee. Instead, we down it so we can move forward with our list of to-dos. Well, I for one, am tired of chugging hot beverages! And, it wasn’t until I saw a movie recently, Peaceful Warrior, that I was reminded how wasteful it is to rush life away and not enjoy the smallest of miracles occurring around us every second of every day.
The day after seeing this movie, I woke to a Monday morning that was not so typical. The difference in this Monday compared to others was in my perspective. When I washed my hair, I indulged my sense of smell by taking long, purposeful breaths of the shampoo’s fragrance. When I brushed my teeth, I paid attention to the tickling sensation that the electric toothbrush projected onto my gums. When I sipped my coffee, I reflected on its delicious flavor. Opening my senses to the world around me has made me realize that each day is a miracle in itself and that I have surrounding me a great, big playground for my emotions.
Consequently, by enjoying the beauty in soap bubbles as I lather them while washing my hands or the peace in witnessing morning dew on a leaf as I slide into the driver’s seat of my car, I actually now find myself wishing each day would last forever. Instead of waiting for the weekend to enjoy my life, I find ways each and every day to enjoy the day I’ve been granted. I no longer wait for Saturday to oil paint or to create a greeting card. I make time to awaken my senses in every daily moment.
That Monday morning, when I stopped wishing my life away, was the day I began to really live.
