Felted Cell Case
Designed by: Amy Law
Skill level: Intermediate
Felted purses and accessories are popular now,
especially as the cool winter months make us think of cozy textiles. Here's a
quick felting project to make a cell phone carrying case. We used silk roving
for more interesting texture.
Idea: Make yours in different colors, if
desired, to match your purses.
Materials needed:
- Blue felt
- Kreinik Silk Roving- white
- Wool roving- Red
- Kreinik Metallic #12 Braid in 421 Azalea and
002 Gold
- Tools: felting needles, pad, scissors,
tapestry needle
Instructions:
1. Cut a rectangle of blue felt to be your
base. Fold in half to find the "cover" of your cell case.
2. Begin laying out your design on your base
felt, starting with the silk in a circle for the center of your flower. Create
"petals" with your wool around the silk. Lay your base felt (open) on your
needlefelting mat and begin felting. Move strands of the fibers as needed to
create the design you want.
3. When your flower base is well secured, add a
circle of red wool for the center of your flower. Continue felting until all
pieces are secured.
4. Embellish your felted design with Kreinik
metallic braid. Stitch around the outside of your silk center with the gold
braid and then add a zig-zag design around the red center of your flower. Finish
your case by folding the base in half and sewing up the sides to close them.
