Woven Polymer Clay Pendant and Earrings

We thank talented designer Hilda Walker for sharing her passion for metallic threads mixed with polymer clay. Use Iron-on threads for a fun addition, making your designs stand out from the crowd for truly unique art project.

Materials:

• 1 1/2 oz polymer clay - main color*
• 1 1/2 oz polymer clay-contrasting color*
• * Kato PolyClay was used in this piece
• For Pendant
• Kreinik Iron-on 1/8" ribbon - #6130, and #6275
• Neck Wire or cording

For Earrings:

• Kreinik Iron-on #16 Braid - #6130 and #6275
• earring findings

Equipment

• pasta Machine
• Clay Blade
• Scissors
• Circle cutters - 1 1/4" and 1 1/2"
• Segment of wire or double pointed knitting needle

Instructions for pendant:

1. Condition the main color clay and roll out on a #4 on pasta machine (#7 is largest on Hilda's machine). Cut into a 3" square and then cut 
into strips 1/8" to 1/4" wide, depending on your preference.

2. Align strips of clay with a slight space between strips to make it easier for weaving.

3. Next, weave strips of Kreinik iron-on Ribbon as the cross threads in the "clay" fabric.

4.Condition contrasting color clay, and roll out on the largest setting on the pasta machine. cut out a 1 1/2' circle and a 1 1/4:" circle. Set the 1 1/2" circle aside for later use. With remaining clay, roll a 1 1/4" ball. Slice a side off the ball to form the "hill" for your pendant to give it depth. Place this piece in the center of 
the smaller circle.

5. Drape the woven "fabric" over the form that you have just made with the contrast clay. Cut away extra, and form the "fabric" to the shape.

6.Take the 1 1/2" circle and place a thick wire or knitting needle above the center line of the circle. This will create the bail for your pendant to be strung on the neck wire. next, take your woven piece and place it in the middle of the larger circle. This will cover part of the wire. Take the contrast clay, roll a snake, and apply it 
around the woven piece to cover the larger circle and form a bezel around your woven piece.

7. Bake pendant according to manufacturers directions. For the Kato PolyClay, Hilda baked for 45 minutes at 275 degrees.

8. Remove wire/knitting needle, and string pendant on neck wire (or cording).

Instructions for earrings:

Repeat process for earring using the Iron-on Braid instead of ribbons, however, no hole is made for stringing. Change the circle size for the earrings that you prefer.
