- Blackwork Style Victorian Ornament
- Designed by Jill
Cater Nixon
Blackwork
embroidery is a beautiful, historical embroidery technique involving lines and
patterns and colors and textures. We know that the technique has been used at
least since the 16th century, and you may have seen paintings of royal figures
wearing blackwork blouses in your local museum or history books.
It primarily consists of outline and filling stitches worked in repeating
patterns. Blackwork is so named because black silk thread was commonly used on
white or light fabric-and often accented with gold threads-to decorate clothing
and linens. Today, the technique of blackwork is innovative and exciting as we
can choose colors that match our home decor and use metallic threads to play
with light and texture.
This
ornament design was created by British needlework designer Jill Cater Nixon
using Kreinik's antique-finish Vintage Threads in braid and Blending Filament
(for different light and texture effects). Enjoy the beautiful effects of these
threads while making a simple yet elegant holiday ornament.
